SRINAGAR, JANUARY 16 (BANN) : In a major crackdown, the Legal Metrology Department (LMD), under the guidance of Controller Anuradha Gupta, sealed 30 unauthorized fuel outlets in Kashmir Valley in a single day. These petrol pumps were found selling petrol and diesel in violation of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
The department launched this operation to safeguard consumer interests by enforcing the Legal Metrology Act and Petroleum Rules. Special teams were formed to inspect various districts in Kashmir, including Budgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, Pulwama, Shopian, Srinagar, and Anantnag. During these inspections, several irregularities were discovered, leading to the sealing of the illegal outlets.
According to officials, these outlets were operating without authorization from Oil Marketing Companies or the Petroleum and Safety Organization. The dispensing nozzles used at these pumps lacked verification and certification from the Legal Metrology Department, raising serious concerns about the accuracy of the fuel being dispensed.
The inspections revealed that consumers were at risk of receiving inaccurate quantities of fuel, as the measuring devices had not been certified or checked by the appropriate authorities. Legal cases have been filed against the operators of these petrol pumps, and proceedings under the relevant sections of the Legal Metrology Act and Petroleum Rules have been initiated.
The order from Controller Anuradha Gupta highlighted reports of illegal petrol pumps operating in violation of Sections 12, 24, 26, and 30 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. These violations not only undermine consumer rights but also pose significant safety hazards due to the lack of compliance with safety standards mandated by the Petroleum and Safety Organization.
Additionally, the pumps were found to be in breach of Rule 141 of the Petroleum Rules and other associated regulations, which outline the safe handling and storage of flammable substances like petrol and diesel.
Anuradha Gupta assured that the Legal Metrology Department would continue to take strict action against violators to ensure transparency and safety. She urged consumers to purchase fuel only from authorized outlets and report any irregularities or short deliveries to the department.
Consumer cooperation is essential in stopping illegal fuel operations and ensuring fair practices, she added. The department emphasized its commitment to protecting public interest and maintaining safe fuel distribution across the region._BANN
