Mission to Transform Farming Through HADP Gains Momentum

Kulgam, July 29 (BANN):In a bid to promote innovation and sustainability in the agricultural sector, District Development Commissioner (DDC) Kulgam, Athar Aamir Khan, today interacted with a progressive farmer from Wanigund village, Qayoom Ahmad Allie, lauding his achievements under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).
Qayoom Ahmad Allie has emerged as a role model in his community by moving away from conventional farming practices and embracing climate-smart, high-value agriculture. With support from HADP, he has successfully adopted scientific techniques that have significantly boosted both yield and income.
As part of the Protected Cultivation Initiative, Qayoom was sanctioned a Low-Tech Poly Greenhouse (PG House), which enabled him to grow high-value crops such as capsicum, cucumber, and leafy greens in controlled conditions. This protected his produce from unpredictable weather and pests, resulting in up to four times higher yields.
He also received financial assistance for nursery development under the “Area Expansion of Niche Crops” component. This support allowed him to raise healthy planting material for the renowned Kashmiri Lal Chilli. The nursery has contributed to faster crop maturity and improved productivity, further strengthening his farming operations.
Under the “Open Field Vegetable Production” scheme, Qayoom was provided with certified hybrid seeds. By following improved agronomic practices like line sowing, ridge and furrow layout, and nutrient management based on soil health card recommendations, he successfully cultivated crops such as cauliflower, knol khol, and brinjal.
These strategic interventions have led to a 35% to 50% increase in yield, especially in protected cultivation. His annual income has also seen a notable rise through the sale of high-value crops and nursery plants, supported by an extended growing season.
During his interaction, DDC Athar Aamir Khan praised Qayoom’s dedication and encouraged other farmers in the district to follow his example. He urged them to utilise modern techniques and make the best use of government-run schemes like HADP to build a more productive, resilient, and market-oriented farming ecosystem.
Qayoom Ahmad Allie’s story stands as a testament to the power of innovation and structured support. His success not only highlights the transformative potential of HADP but also inspires a new generation of farmers to reimagine agriculture in Kulgam.-BANN
