
Drass, August 1: A cloudburst struck the Mina-2 area of Minamarg in the Drass sector on Friday evening, triggering flash floods and landslides that damaged temporary shelters of Bakerwal families and disrupted movement on the Drass–Srinagar National Highway.
According to officials, four temporary Bakerwal shelters (deras), situated opposite the Police Post at Minamarg, were affected by the sudden flash floods and landslides. Around 20 people were impacted by the incident.
Police personnel responded swiftly and safely evacuated all affected families to the Police Post Minamarg building and a nearby Sheep Husbandry Department facility. Their timely intervention ensured that no loss of life was reported.
In a separate incident, a Wagon R vehicle was swept away by the strong floodwaters. However, all passengers managed to escape safely, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.The flash floods also forced the temporary closure of traffic on the Drass–Srinagar National Highway.
Road clearance teams, assisted by police personnel and heavy machinery, are working to remove debris and restore normal traffic movement at the earliest.Meanwhile, District Police Drass has urged tourists, commuters, and local residents to avoid crossing overflowing streams, water channels, and other flood-prone areas.
Authorities have also advised the public to exercise caution while travelling until weather conditions improve and traffic is fully restored-(BANN NEWS).
