Srinagar, Aug 20 : In a significant move against corruption, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) apprehended a Village-level Worker (VLW) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Sources informed that Nazir Ahmad Mir, associated with Block Ramhal Vilgam in Kupwara, was caught seeking bribes connected to the PMAY scheme.

Mir, who resides in Kralpora, Kupwara, was caught red-handed by the ACB while demanding a bribe of ₹20,000 from a local resident, Mohd Akbar Bhat, son of Ali Mohammad Bhat, from Harkpora, Kukroosa Vilgam.

The bribe was allegedly demanded to expedite the release of funds under the PMAY scheme, which is intended to provide affordable housing for the rural poor.

This incident has sparked anger in the community, with many expressing their dismay over the misuse of authority by public officials.

While the PMAY scheme is designed to improve the lives of the underprivileged by providing housing support, instances of corruption have cast a shadow over its implementation.

This recent arrest highlights the ongoing difficulties in maintaining transparency within government programs. In response to the arrest, the ACB has initiated an investigation to uncover further irregularities in the execution of the PMAY scheme within the district.

This development has sent a clear message to public servants and officials about the consequences of engaging in corrupt practices, with the ACB reaffirming its commitment to eliminating corruption across all levels of governance.

District authorities urge the public to report any corruption-related incidents to ensure community vigilance in the fight against corruption.

Further details about the case will emerge as the investigation continues, according to sources.— (KB)
