OYO, a well-known travel booking platform, has introduced a new check-in policy in its partner hotels, starting in Meerut. According to the updated guidelines, unmarried couples will no longer be allowed to check in. All couples, including those with online bookings, must now provide valid proof of their relationship during check-in. Partner hotels have been given the authority to decline bookings involving couples based on their assessment of local cultural norms.
The policy was first implemented in Meerut and may extend to other cities based on feedback and outcomes. This decision was influenced by requests from civil society groups in Meerut and similar demands from residents in other regions.
Pawas Sharma, the Regional Head of OYO North India, stated that the company aims to ensure a safe and responsible hospitality experience. While acknowledging individual rights, OYO is also committed to working with local authorities and community organizations to address concerns. The policy’s impact will be reviewed periodically to make necessary adjustments.
This step is part of OYO’s efforts to enhance its reputation as a family-friendly brand. The initiative is designed to attract longer stays and build trust among families, business travelers, students, solo visitors, and religious tourists.
In addition to this policy, OYO has launched safety measures across India. These include holding seminars with police and hotel partners, blacklisting hotels involved in inappropriate activities, and taking action against unauthorized properties using the OYO name. The company’s goal is to promote secure and ethical hospitality services for all customers.
