Srinagar, Aug 17 (BANN News): The typically calm hallways of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar were filled with outrage and sorrow today as doctors and medical students came together to condemn the horrific rape and murder of a fellow doctor from Kolkata.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout the medical community, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, with calls for justice and enhanced safety measures for healthcare professionals.
The protest drew significant participation from both students and faculty members within the GMC Srinagar campus. Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Justice for Our Sister,” “Safety for Doctors,” and “Stop Violence Against Women.” Interns marched in silence, chanting slogans demanding swift action against those responsible for the heinous crime.
A deeply affected student at GMC Srinagar shared with Media , “We are here not just as medical professionals, but as fellow human beings, devastated by the senseless violence that claimed the life of one of our own. This attack is not just on a doctor, but on the dignity and safety of women everywhere. We urge the authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.”
The protest also highlighted the broader issue of safety for medical professionals, particularly women, who often work long hours in challenging environments.
“We dedicate ourselves to saving lives, yet we constantly face the threat of violence, whether in the hospital or outside. This situation is untenable. The government must introduce stricter laws and ensure a safe working environment for all healthcare workers,” another GMC student added.
Similar protests have erupted in various medical institutions across the country in response to the tragic event in Kolkata.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for nationwide solidarity and urged the government to take immediate steps to protect doctors.
The protest in Srinagar concluded with a silent prayer for the deceased doctor, with many participants seen offering their prayers for her soul.—(BANN News)
