Kolkata, Feb 2: A woman in West Bengal’s Howrah district allegedly convinced her husband to sell his kidney for ₹10 lakh under the pretext of funding their daughter’s education, only to flee with the entire amount and her lover, police said on Sunday. Following a complaint by the husband’s family from Sankrail, the police initiated an investigation into the incident.
According to the complaint, the woman had been pressuring her husband for a year to sell his kidney to secure financial stability and provide better education for their 12-year-old daughter. Trusting her, the man agreed to undergo the surgery after she finalized a deal with a buyer.
The operation took place last month, and after receiving the money, the husband returned home. His wife advised him to rest and avoid stepping outside to ensure a smooth recovery. However, one day, she left home and never came back. Later, the man discovered that the entire ₹10 lakh, along with additional savings, was missing from their almirah. With the help of friends and acquaintances, the family traced her to Barrackpore in Kolkata’s northern suburbs, where she was reportedly living with her lover.
The complaint mentioned that she had been in a relationship with the man for a year after connecting with him on Facebook. When the husband, his mother, and their daughter went to confront her, she refused to come out. Her lover allegedly warned them that she would file for divorce, citing physical and mental abuse during their 16-year marriage.
Speaking to the media, the woman denied taking money from her in-laws’ house and claimed she only took what she had saved herself. Police, after reviewing video footage of the lover’s conversation with the husband’s family, have begun an investigation and plan to question both the woman and her partner before taking further action. – (PTI)
