
Jammu, October 1, 2024: The three-phase Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have officially concluded today with the final phase of voting. The Election Commission of India had announced the schedule on August 16, 2024. Voting for the first phase covering 24 constituencies took place on September 18, followed by the second phase for 26 constituencies on September 25, and the third and final phase, covering 40 constituencies, concluded today.
In the first phase, the voter turnout stood at 61.38%, the second phase saw 57.31%, and the third phase recorded a tentative turnout of 68.72%. The overall voter turnout for the entire election process stands at approximately 63.45% (tentative).
District-Wise Comparison of Voter Turnout
Among the districts, Kishtwar recorded the highest voter turnout at 80.20%, followed by Udhampur at 75.87%, Samba at 75.22%, and Reasi at 74.68%. A comparison of voter turnout between the last Assembly elections and the current one shows significant changes in some districts. For instance, Kupwara recorded 65.81% turnout in 2024, slightly down from 71.48% in 2014. Meanwhile, Pulwama saw a marginal increase to 46.99% in 2024, compared to 44.08% in 2014.
Notable Assembly Constituency Turnouts
Inderwal constituency in Kishtwar district saw the highest voter turnout at 82.16%, followed by Padder-Nagseni at 80.67% and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra at 80.45%. Other notable turnouts include Karnah with 68.50% and Handwara with 69.21% in Kupwara district.
This election marks an important chapter in J&K’s political landscape, with the participation levels varying significantly across districts and constituencies. The final voter turnout and results are awaited to assess the impact on the region’s governance.
